How do I know when the educational cards are updated?

When updated content is made available, the icon next to each will change. A green icon with “Update” text is displayed. Simply tapping the document will prompt you to download the most current one. Downloading an update automatically replaces the existing version on your phone, making sure you have access to the most current information available.

Do I need to be “online” to view the educational cards found on the App?

 No!  You can download all or selected educational cards found on the App to your smart phone.  Once you do this you can view the cards at any time, whether you are on or offline..

Is the FFL Central App available for download by the general public?

The FFL Central App is made available to the general public via the Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store free of charge. Anyone who is interested in utilizing the helicopter activation module must register in advance and be approved prior to first use. Those simply interested in learning more about the program, our educational offerings, or contact information can do so immediately upon downloading the App.

What if I get a new phone? Do I need to do anything regarding the use of the FFL Central

Yes! It is the actual phone that is registered, NOT the person who owns it. So if you get a new phone, you must re-register your new phone. After downloading the FFL Central App on your new device, you will be automatically prompted to re-register when attempting to use the Helicopter Activation module.

What if I am in an area with limited or reduced call phone service, will the App still work?

The Helicopter Activation module uses SMS/TXT Messaging to transmit messages to/from our Flight Communications Center. SMS/TXT Messaging works in areas where traditional voice / data may not.

I work at a number of different hospitals/departments/agencies. When I register to be able to use Helicopter Activation module, which should I use?

Please use your primary hospital/department/agency. When the FFL Central App is used to request the helicopter while working for a secondary hospital/department/agency, you can notify our Flight Communications Center during the activation process.

Where do I find out if my agency/hospital is located in FFL’s service area so I can register for the Helicopter Activation module of the App?

FFL serves the following counties in Illinois and Wisconsin. If your agency/hospital is found within one of the counties listed, you may register for the Helicopter Activation module of the App.

Can I request multiple helicopters using the App?

Yes! By utilizing the text portion of the Helicopter Activation module, you can notify our Flight Communications Center that you will need multiple aircraft. We’ll coordinate the resources you need – including utilizing other air medical programs based on your location, making sure to keep your dispatch center notified of all incoming aircraft.

Can I use the FFL Central App to request the helicopter when I am en route to the scene vs. using it once I arrive on scene?

Yes! The best way to save valuable minutes for your patient is to use the FFL Central App as soon as you think you will need the helicopter! While the GPS coordinates will not be those of the eventual scene, the ability to add text to the alert message allows the user to send the exact location of the incident to the FFL Communications Center. Our Flight Communication Specialist will go through the normal process of verifying with your dispatch center/hospital the request and correct location.

What if someone intentionally misuses the Helicopter Activation module of the FFL Central App to launch the helicopter?

Flight For Life reviews all registration requests, and will only register appropriate users. FFL will be monitoring the Helicopter Activation module of the App. If inappropriate utilization of this module occurs by an individual, their access will be terminated immediately.

Will the Flight For Life Central App bypass the IC system or 911 dispatch?

No, the Helicopter Activation portion of the App does not bypass your current dispatch process or the incident command system. Once FFL Communications receives your request for the helicopter via the App, our Flight Communications Specialist will immediately contact your dispatch center/ hospital unit to confirm the need for the helicopter and to obtain further information.

Do I have to enable “Location Services” on my phone for the Helicopter Activation (H.A.M.) to work?

Yes, you must enable “Location Services” on your phone for the Helicopter Activation module to work correctly when activating the helicopter. You can still utilize other portions of FFL Central without your “Location Services” enabled.

Can I use FFL Central App on my Blackberry?

Unfortunately, the App is only available on iPhone and Android

Can I use the App on my iPad or other tablets?

The App will run on an iPad or Android tablet; however, it was designed specifically to run iPhone and Android mobile phones. While it may appear to run correctly on certain tablet devices, some features of the App will be degraded due to components absent in most tablets. For that reason, the App is currently supported on Android and iOS mobile phones only.
