Aeroterra Health: A New National Effort to Strengthen Medical Transport

A major step forward in emergency medical care is taking shape. Five respected nonprofit organizations from across the country have united to launch Aeroterra Health, a new nonprofit Health Care Utility created to improve the way patients are transported during critical medical moments.

Medical transport—whether by helicopter or specialized ground units—is a vital part of the healthcare system. Yet many programs face the same challenges: rising costs, staffing demands, and the need for constant improvement in quality, safety and technology. Aeroterra Health was created to help solve these issues together rather than alone.

A Collaborative Solution

Aeroterra Health brings together Advocate Health, Flight For Life Wisconsin, HealthNet Aeromedical Services, Intermountain Health, and MedFlight of Ohio. Supported by the Mindshare Institute, these partners are combining their knowledge, experience, and commitment  to strengthen transport medicine.

By working as a unified group, Aeroterra Health will:

  • Increase safety through shared best practices and innovations
  • Reduce costs by leveraging combined resources
  • Support long-term sustainability for nonprofit medical transport services

As a member-governed organization, each participating program has a voice in shaping the future of transport medicine.

Why It Matters

During emergencies, every second counts. Reliable and efficient medical transport can be the difference between life and death. By teaming up rather than competing, these nonprofits are building a stronger system that benefits patients, communities, and medical providers alike.

Clinton V. Burley, President and CEO of HealthNet Aeromedical Services, captured the purpose well: by joining forces with like-minded programs, organizations can “maximize safety, reduce operating costs, maintain access, and further advance our field.”

Looking Ahead

Aeroterra Health is just the beginning. The Mindshare Institute—focused on designing nonprofit Health Care Utilities to address major healthcare challenges—plans to help launch similar initiatives in other areas of medicine. Meanwhile, Aeroterra Health will continue inviting additional medical transport partners that share its mission of improving safety, sustainability, and access.

This collaborative model marks a bold new chapter for transport medicine in the United States. With shared purpose and collective strength, Aeroterra Health is setting the stage for safer flights, stronger programs, and better care for patients everywhere.
